The Labour MP for Hartlepool has quit the Commons, setting up a key test of Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership in a “red wall” constituency.

The Labour Party confirmed that Mike Hill, 57, who first won the seat in Co Durham at the 2017 election, resigned this morning with immediate effect.

He has been embroiled in allegations of sexual harassment since 2019, which he has strongly denied. His resigned after a meeting with Nick Brown, the chief whip, this morning.

Worst possible scenario for Sir K, basically no win and a good chance of another labour red wall seat disappearing

The Tories will win that seat and would have easily if it wasn’t for Brexit Party votes
